WHAT IS AN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED STEROID INJECTION?
Steroid injections, also called corticosteroid injections, are anti-inflammatory medicines that are used to treat a wide range of conditions.
A steroid injection administered under ultrasound guidance can be more targeted and can provide significant pain relief, reduce inflammation and improve joint mobility for those suffering from long-term joint pain, as well as in the management of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Ultrasound-guided steroid injections are available at Prime Health and are administered by our highly experienced team of healthcare professionals.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH ULTRASOUND-GUIDED STEROID INJECTION?
Some of the conditions that may be treated with an ultrasound-guided steroid injection:
- Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis of joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle along with small joints of the hands and feet.
- Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tennis and golfers elbow or plantar fasciitis.
- Tendonitis and bursitis around the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hip.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HAVING AN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED STEROID INJECTION?
Evidence suggests steroid injections administered under ultrasound guidance are far more accurate than without. Needle placement can be carefully monitored and can target the problem area.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR HAVING AN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED STEROID INJECTION?
The radiologist will administer the steroid injection under ultrasound control. All radiologists working at Prime Health are all FRCR accredited and work within a sub-speciality area of interest.
HOW QUICKLY DOES IT TAKE FOR A STEROID INJECTION TO START WORKING AND HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
A steroid injection usually takes a few days to start working, although some evidence suggests it can start working after a few hours.
After a steroid injection, the reduction in pain and inflammation in the affected joint should last for up to several months.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
You may experience a small amount of discomfort at the injection site and occasionally redness and swelling. Very rarely, as with all clinical procedures, you may develop an infection.
In line with World Health Organisation guidelines, additional safety policies have been introduced and our clinicians must now consider any risks posed by COVID-19. Patients will be asked to complete a questionnaire and the healthcare professional will need to determine that the benefits of the steroid injection, especially to patients over 70 or with co-morbidities, outweigh any risk of infection.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL FOR AN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED STEROID INJECTION?
Yes, you will require a referral from a health
care professional, such as your GP or a consultant for an Ultrasound-guided steroid injection. A physiotherapist can refer you for an Ultrasound-guided injection on the advice of a radiologist following an initial MRI or ultrasound scan. If you do not have a referral, please contact our helpful and friendly team who will be able to assist.
