National Provider. Locally Delivered.
What it is
A 2.5% polyacrylamide hydrogel injected into the knee joint. It is not a steroid, and not made from your own blood. It stays in the joint and is not absorbed by the body.
Who it can help
Adults with confirmed mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis whose symptoms affect daily life, where activity change, weight management, pain relief, physiotherapy or earlier injections have not given enough relief.
Who it is not for
- Advanced, bone-on-bone osteoarthritis, where a joint replacement is the better option
- Active infection in or around the joint
- Inflammatory arthritis that has not been assessed and managed
- Pregnancy, or planning to become pregnant
- Some anticoagulants or bleeding disorders, until reviewed
On the day
The appointment takes 30 to 45 minutes. Local anaesthetic is used, and live ultrasound guides the needle into the joint space. Most people describe brief pressure rather than sharp pain. You should not drive afterwards, so please arrange to be collected.
