What is a Standing CT scan?
A Standing CT scan is used to create weight-bearing, three-dimensional images of the lower limbs and joints. Using a radiation dose equivalent to plain x-rays, a standing CT scan will scan both sides of the body in a single ‘pass’ and is completed in less than 60 seconds.

Common Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions about our services and appointments at Prime Health.
While a CT scan will not directly harm your baby, we generally don’t scan patients who are, or might be, pregnant unless their doctor can confirm that the benefit of a scan outweighs the risk. You will need to discuss this with your doctor.
Our Standing CT scanner has a seat for people unable to stand because of injury. If you are wearing a plaster cast a Standing CT scan can still be useful for diagnosis and there is no need to remove it.
A Standing CT uses Cone Beam CT (CBCT) to produce 3D images. The radiation dose is much lower than traditional CT scans as it uses a concentrated, low-power x-ray beam instead of a fan-shaped, high-output x-ray beam. It also allows both feet and ankles to be scanned at the same time, allowing the opposite side to act as a normal comparison without any significant additional radiation exposure.
Traditionally, imaging of the foot and ankle involves plain x-rays, which are two-dimensional (2D), and the standard images taken are from above and from the side. It’s then up to your clinician to estimate how these would look in 3D.As technology has evolved, it is now possible to obtain a 3D scan in a standing functional position using Standing CT. It gives your doctor a much better picture of what might be wrong and helps them better diagnose and treat your health concern. A Standing CT scan is particularly helpful for diagnosing issues with flattened arches, bunions or other toe deformities.
