Prostate scanning + PSA on site

Prime Health Stockport runs a one-visit prostate pathway. If you do not yet have a PSA result, we can do the blood test here on the day. Once we have the result, we arrange the right MRI for your age and PSA, a biparametric or, where indicated, a multiparametric scan. A consultant radiologist reports every scan.

PSA on site

The PSA blood test is a simple venous sample taken at the centre. Results come back the same or next working day. If your PSA is below the raised threshold for your age, a biparametric MRI is scheduled. If it is raised, a multiparametric MRI is scheduled. You are not asked to choose the right test, that is our job.

Age-specific PSA thresholds we use for triage

• Age 40 to 49, raised PSA is above 2.5 ng/ml
• Age 50 to 59, raised PSA is above 3.5 ng/ml
• Age 60 to 69, raised PSA is above 4.5 ng/ml
• Age 70 to 79, raised PSA is above 6.5 ng/ml

Finasteride and dutasteride lower PSA, so if you take either, we double the reported result for triage. Under 40 or over 79, call us and we will advise the right route.

What happens next

Where the report is reassuring, you are told plainly and not sold an appointment you do not need. Where the finding suggests further action, we route you to the NHS 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard where clinically appropriate and transfer your images free of charge, so nothing is repeated and no time is lost.
