A steroid injection placed under live ultrasound by a consultant radiologist. Precise, because the needle is watched the whole way in.
An ultrasound-guided injection at Prime Health is available at all four centres. Because the injection is placed under live ultrasound, a consultant radiologist can see exactly where the medication goes, which makes it more accurate than a blind injection and often more comfortable.
Why guided beats blind
A steroid injection only helps if it reaches the right place. Live ultrasound lets the radiologist watch the needle the whole way in and confirm the medication has landed where it should, which improves the odds of relief and reduces the chance of repeating it.
Often part of the same visit
Where a scan finds something an injection would help, the injection can frequently be arranged at the same centre, planned by people who have seen the same images. Rehabilitation, where physiotherapy is on site, can follow on from there.
